Description

Construction of a wooden lighthouse was begun in 1903 and completed in 1904. It housed a fourth order fresnel lens that produced a fixed light. However, the harsh conditions deteriorated the wood and in 1924 the dilapidated wooden structure was replaced with a rectangular single-story reinforced concrete tower. The Guard Island Lighthouse is located in the Clarence Strait at the mouth of the Tongass Narrows. The view is toward the southwest showing the mountains and glaciers of Prince of Wales Island in the distance. This picture was taken on 26 May 2009. I can only imagine what it must have been like to work this light. What an isolated existance! It sounds lovely. sigh If only one could just sit there and read ... but!... they expect one to work, as well! Still -- it's a gorgeous place and a tempting thought!
