Description

P-59B "Airacomet", America's first jet-propelled airplane. General Hap Arnold ordered the development of the P-59 on September 4, 1941. The British had freely provided data to the U.S.A. on its highly secret Whittle jet engine and the General Electric Company, Schenectady, New York, agreed to produce a U.S. version, the type I-A. Due to the proximity of the Bell Aircraft Corporation at Buffalo to the General Electric plant, it was selected to design and construct a fighter-interceptor around the new-type engine. The P-59 project was conducted under the utmost secrecy and few people knew of it. The first airplane was completed during the summer of 1942, and on October 1, 1942, it made its initial flight at Muroc Dry Lake (now Edwards Air Force Base), California. One year later, the P-59 was ordered into production, to be powered by I-14 and I-16 engines, improved versions of the I-A. The P-59 is on display in the Research and Development gallery of the USAF Museum in Dayton. Thanks for stopping by, Bill:) More details and photos: P-59B Airacomet

Whoo. Do not recall seeing pics of these. Glad the bugs have been worked out of jet engines - must have been a frustrating time for engineers.

I love the way you're using postwork to strip these planes of any extraneous detail. It's like you've captured their essence, their form and function, without any distractions. Good stuff!!

Ah yes, our first jet fighter...I remember it well, especially those air intakes. I see you had oodles of fun with fractionalizing the dark and light areas in this fine impressionistic concept, Bill! And, you're right, aircraft are a form of artwork, especially the modern commercial and military jets.
