Description

Maitenance and I were outside with Tanner when we saw this bright yellow caterpillar crawling along the window ledge. To our amazement then came this little bee that attacked as you can see, it attacked over and over from different angles. This is only a few of the photos I got as this occurred over almost a half hours time. I found it very interesting that the bee appeared never to get a sting in and the caterpillar was the clear winner as the bee finally gave up and left. I have never seen this before or heard of such a thing happening either. If any of you have I would love to hear from you. Of course I looked up the info below. There were lots of pictures but little info. The moth is a grey with small black markings. Acronicta americana - American Dagger Moth Moderately large, densely clothed in long white or yellowish setae of variable length; long, paired black lashes on first and third abdominal segments and unpaired medial lash on eighth segment. Head black. Food: maples and many other forest hardwoods. Thanks for looking and for previous comments and favs!

THat's a wasp, Lynn! I think he failed to get a sting in because the hairs on the creature are longer than his equipment!! SUPERB set of pics, so very interesting!

I have seen this behaviour before, your yellow jacket probably has a nest somewhere with similar piantwork, so then therefore this catty was then seen as a threat, mind you that aside, it's already a highly well known fact that wasps can be real S*&T heads when it comes to using their nasty little daggers, great series of pics BTW

Dreadful little things wasps are! I would think the hairs on the caterpillar stopped it getting too close. Well spotted
