Description

Digital tablet painting Photoshop 5.5 I cleaned her up and made her to have a pg rating. I did this in order to post her on other sites that ban nudity... When I painted her nude I was making a statement about her, and that was, that she has lost her modesty and is displaying herself shamelessly... however I think this version works equally well and I don't need to show her breasts to tell this story. Thank you all, for all your last comments, please let me know your thoughts on this . Tom

On the one hand I respect your decision to rework it for a larger audience. On the other hand, it says something about the others who view nudity as wrong or sinful and must be banned or censored with the idea that we must 'protect our youth from such shameful influences' Excellent image, even in this form. The message is not lost, at least not with me.

Faemike55 isnt that exactly what this image is about? The fact that they see simple nudity as something shameful shows the low mindset that he is so artistically representing? This is a true work of art! FAV

The smoke over the nipples reminds me of that infamous photo when that Fascist John Ashcroft ordered tape to be placed over the bare breast of the Statue of Justice, then held a press conference in front of this absurdity. The overall image is a tad crowded and confusing. The flag on a pole-- looks to me like she's straddling the pole. Kinda kinky. Lady Liberty's crown-- is this Lady Liberty, stripped of her tablet and robe? The interdiction symbol on the wall-- no idea. Are walls banned? Not sure what the book is; I'm guessing a Bible? The cross in the sand-- gotta say that Biblebangers remain a huge threat to Liberty and the Constitution. The only symbol that works is the punctured hourglass; time is running out. The chains behind her back-- generally captives have the chains in front but I can see why you palced thm in back as they would otherwise hang in front of the flag and further reinforce the fact she's straddling the flag.

The image is very good and the meaning continues being present; anyway I have to say something:The women have breasts, and the men penis. All we know it since we are born and the fact that in certain places to show them is banned is a problem that they have to solve, not the artist. In most of the civilized places the nakedness is something natural, in other places there is a certain false "prudence" coming from the male chauvinism that transforms the women into objects and therefore their body must not be showed. But I believe that the one that should evolve is not the one civilized, but the primitive one. More on this topic, the people that says that the nakedness is not capable for young audiences it is very stupid from the moment in that all the children its first months of life have passed feeding of the breasts of their mothers that become something beautiful and sacred. But when the woman's body becomes a simple desire object that one can buy or sell, then it becomes something forbidden. The drawing continues being beautiful, but the fog is absurd and unnecessary. The one that has problems with seeing it doesn't have any obligation of looking at it, but certainly, the artist should not give to superficial prejudices and denigrations of the nature. God has made perfect the body, is the man the one that imagine it like shameful.

I think it worked better with the nudity, but I can understand why you PGed it.

I just compared the two images, I have to admit that the previous one "talked" to me better. But, of course, I am not a purist... Still, both images have an excellent quality and demonstrate your great artistic abilities.

I have to interject here for a moment... as to other people not wanting to see nudity, I understand , lets assume that I was comissioned to paint a portrait of a mans wife, and I paint her nude because I'm holding to my artistic beliefs... Who's holding the self righteous baton now? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and every beholder has the right to choose for his/ her self what is beautiful and apropriate. I hate it when Artist get on a soapbox.... Sorry about the pause... I had to get off my soapbox ;) I'm keepin it handy just in case tho- Tom

I have compared both images and I have to say that to me both convey the sad but true message equally well. Nudity for me is not the issue but the sad thing is that alot of people wont understand why you have been motivated to create this image when there are clear signs everywhere in this world that there is something deeply wrong. any chance of you doing a UK version, the queen wont look as lovely, but we need waking up to the sad truth too ;) 5*

This is a wonderful image and a very good idea that have the potential of being one of the greatest ever! But what is the mystical smoke/sand? that is coming through the window/crack in the wall? It is out of place and looks plastered on. I am sure you can think of something better! (or go back to the former) There is one thing I am 100% sure of that in the end Tom will surprice us all and the finished painting will be something absolutly stunning!

Yes, it work well. But its a shame you had to produce a picture because our self appointed moral guardians say you can't do this or that... In case, it turns us all into dribbling knife wielding homicidal maniacs! So, why aren't THEY all knife wielding homicidal maniacs then! When is someone gonna realise this... If it doesn't screw them up... why should it screw us up! So ends today's lecture! Still think the picture is great and Britannia is in much the same shape! Rob.

I agree with those who say you shouldn't have felt the need to "clean up" your work. This is grand, don't get me wrong, but the original is so much more powerful. Nudity need not equate "smut."

Tom, Glad I didn't comment earlier. Reading all the comments here is enlightening. Both versions work absolutely fine for me. We all know there are different audiences and one audience criticizing the other is extremely small minded. You, as a commercial artist, have to meet the requirements of both audiences. This little pushing and shoving match over nudity is simply symptomatic of why we seem to be unable to work as a team in this country. I get tired of the so-called liberals saying, "Think my way or you are wrong and probably nuts!" These two works of art are extremely successful because they stir up the passions of all who see them. Every symbol works for me. I have recently spent an entire day at the WWI Museum in Kansas City. There is a mighty mural on one wall with Lady Liberty seated on a throne like chair, naked from the waist up surrounded by war wounded. There was nothing wrong with that in the 1920s and nothing wrong with it today. I am adding this to my favorites but could easily add your next version too.

Instead of the swirling sand add a couple of giant missles ala Tank Girl. That'll show 'em! Great image. You're really getting the hang of the digital painting.
