Description

This just looked too good to add filters to after blacking out the busy background IMHO. Hence, here is a SPAD XIII of the US Army Expeditionary Force as it would have appeared in the 94th Aero Squadron flown by Capt. Eddie V. Rickenbacker in France in late 1917 and 1918. Please ZOOM...well worth a click. Uncle Sam's "Hat in the Ring" was the squadron identifier and symbolized the US joining France and Great Britain in "The Great War". What a guy! Edward Vernon Rickenbacker (October 8, 1890 - July 27, 1973) was an American fighter ace in World War I and Medal of Honor recipient. He was also a race car driver and automotive designer, a government consultant in military matters and a pioneer in air transportation, particularly as the longtime head of Eastern Air Lines. Thanks for stopping by and all your support. I'd apologize for so many airplanes of late but I am just having too much fun to stop. Hope those of you who may not be into airplanes...will appreciate the shapes, forms, colors, and picture yourself flying around some cloud all by yourself, or better yet with Capt. Eddie in one of these...:-) Bill:) P.S. I read somewhere that this airplane was built by a piano company in Paris. Zoom in and look at the wires between the wings. Remind you of something inside a grand piano?

I love the blacked out backgrounds on these ... for me, it all boils down to that gorgeous golden light. (I'm sure I've mentioned that before, but it keeps being true!)

Stellar lighting effects more than apparent in this terrific concept of the Spad contrasted against the black background, which took some doing to achieve, Bill. Lots of struts and wires on these babies. Captain Eddie would be proud of this composition.

another of your stellar plane shots, the light is wonderfully modulated, the highlights are perfect, and yes I can see the long spindly 'wires' reminiscent of piano-insides. (It was built by a piano manufacturer? Amazing. They must've transformed industries in major ways, for war.) It's a beautiful beast, and the long wires between wings are beautiful counterpoint to the broadness of the wings themselves. A beautiful vision, and I can see why you didn't filter: In this case, your stunning eye & capture are all the filters it needs. Beautiful shot. (Added: I never tire of your planes, even if I'm no expert. They're beautiful as planes, they're very powerful as art, and you always give us fine history & background to bring their service to light.)

This is a superb shot and fine postwork to make this handsome Spad shine on it's own!
