Description
Not A Razorback!
One of the frequent comment we hear is that these are razorback hog.
Sorry, no cigar.
Domesticated Old World pigs were brought here years ago as farm animals. Sometimes they escaped and reverted to the wild, and are locally called razorback.
COLLARED PECCARY; Neither pig nor a razorback, this omnivore’s razor-sharp tusks inspired its nickname, the javelina (have-a-LEE-nah), referring to a javelin or spear. U.S. peccaries live in desert areas and prefer to be near water. Unable to plant, they bed down in the shade during midday heat and forage water-rich prickly pears and agaves in the cool of early morning and evening. They are territorial and live in herds of 5-15 with a hierarchy determined by size; the biggest peccary is dominant.

So interesting!

Our family hunts these every year and we always have plenty of meat and skins around. I have a rug made from a HUGE one - biggest we've ever seen - and at one time I had so many heads mounted on the wall, I started giving them away. They are good eating and for families who need the food, they are a welcome sight in the freezer. Nice shot.

A kind of drama to see such abandonned animals. Interesting photo.
