Description
The Small Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis urticae) butterfly is abundant in most areas. However, its availability often varies yearly. Its commonness may often depend on the status of the common wasp in that particular season, as the wasp is known to feed on the Tortoiseshell's pupae.

At last.. a Small Tortoiseshell. In my youth it was one of the most common butterflies, but now they seem to be very rare.. well where I live anyway. A beautiful capture of this beloved butty.

WOW!!!! Awesome capture, we have an abundance of these this year, my Cheri's taken a few shots, but they don't seem to hold still very long. It seems as if they almost prefer the windy days, never see them when the air is calm. This is amazing zoomed in, such incredible detail.

Très joli… J'ai été cet été au "Naturoscope" d'Honfleur où vivent en permanence un millier de papillons exotiques pour le plaisir du visiteur, mais j'ai photographié au flash. Là sans flash, à f/6,3 avec un 210, c'est plus fort que de jouer dans la neige avec des pains à cacheter en cire!
