Description

The youngest of three sons, Prince Josha always accepted that he would never be King of Leyni. It never bothered Josha as running a kingdom didn't interest him. His father's coldness towards him hurt deeply though; King Canu had no time for a son that would never inherit the throne and focused all of his attention on Prince Jaell, the eldest. Prince Lyle got some attention only because there was always the chance something would happen to Jaell and Lyle would become Crown Prince. Ignored by his father, Josha was very close to his mother, Queen Orta. He spent countless hours at her side and learned from her the things that King Canu felt were 'useless' such as music, cooking and painting. Queen Orta and Queen Bellis were old friends so Queen Orta would take Josha with her to Solis for long periods of time and there he felt at home. Queen Bellis and King Theos treated Josha as one of their own, taking him on outings with their children and even letting him take lessons with them. Prince Josha was only eight when his mother died suddenly and he was devastated. King Canu had even less time for his youngest son now that he was the sole parent. The fates bestowed a small kindness on the boy in the form of an invitation from Queen Bellis and King Theos that they would take Josha to relieve King Canu of the stress of raising three sons alone. Queen Bellis and King Theos provided the family that Josha had longed for, and the children treated him as though he really was a sibling. For nearly a year Prince Josha studied magic with Princess Ayn, learning the most basic of spells since Ayn was only five. In Leyni magic was forbidden among the royal family; King Canu said that magic and those that practiced it were not to be trusted and that magic was the tool of the deceivers. Josha's brother, Lyle, came to visit him when he could and Jaell sent letters but not once did King Canu come to Solis or send a single parchment to his son. That is why it was such a shock to everyone when King Canu came to Solis the day before the Festival of Lumins to demand that his youngest son return home to Leyni. King Theos and Queen Bellis tried to reason with King Canu that this was something the children had been looking forward to and to please let Josha go to the festival with them; it was at the border between Solis and Leyni so they could easily drop Josha off at the end of the festival. King Canu was adamant though, so Josha said goodbye amid many pleas and tears. It was the last time he would ever see King Theos and the Princes of Solis. Prince Josha believes his father had some hand in the killing of King Theos and the princes; it was too coincidental that King Canu demanded his return, thus sparing him from the certain death he would have met had he been allowed to go to the festival. The Kingdom of Leyni extended its compassion and sympathy to Solis and King Canu visited Solis a few times with Prince Jaell but Josha was a prisoner in the castle. He was forbidden to leave the castle or to have any communication with anyone in Solis although Jaell did sneak letters from Princess Ayn and Queen Bellis back to Josha. The one time Josha dared defy his father and try to leave the castle his father's guards apprehended him like a common criminal and put him in the dungeon for three days. “A good lesson in obedience” his father called it. Now, after years of being treated like a burden and forbidden any contact with Solis, his father has informed him that he is to marry Princess Ayn for the good of both Solis and Leyni. “You'll be King of Solis one day, son,” his father says to him whenever he expresses reservations about this arrangement. He hasn't seen Queen Bellis or Princess Ayn since that horrible day and fears that this plan is an attempt to finish what was started so many years ago – killing the remaining members of the royal family of Solis.
