I really like how you went from the memorials to these shots of the protests. As for this shot, it's amazing to me, now, how many of us hippies back then felt so liberated: But many of us didn't know how to deal with gays and lesbians. Many of my friends (me too) supported their rights to equality, but we really didn't know how to accept them. That came later for many of us. Maybe you were different (and great, if you were). But whether or not this man was gay---as you say, you didn't ask him---he looks determined and committed; and he makes a good symbol for the protests of that time. SF was much more open to this movement than many other cities. Even NYCity---where I lived for a while---was less open. My 2d college girlfriend later told me she was bisexual, and I didn't know how to handle it back then---not all of us were as liberated as we thought. I had a journey to make before I fully comprehended all the things I was rallying for back then...In any case, a fine capture of a strong presence, who's singled out very sweetly from this rally.
