His wife was gone, off to see about their missing daughter, Kathy Ann. 4th child of 5 - 3 sons first, Shawn, Derrick and Jake, and then his two daughters, Kathy-Ann and Shanna. His nights were often spent thus, reflecting back, just as he did now, blowing the match out after lighting his pipe... "Lord, God - it's me again, Bart - you know me, I've come to you before. Been coming to you since my daddy taught me how, him being a baptist preacher. Lord, I'm gettin' old, I feel it more and more everyday. I ache everywhere Lord, everywhere - but there is no ache, more painful than that - in my heart. Won't be long now Lord, for I'm to face you, and well - as you know, I've done some wrong, made a few messes here and there. I need to confess some things Lord, before I leave this earth - things concerning what I seen, that ugly night, long time ago - before I left for that damn war in Vietnam. You know what night I'm talking about Lord, you know what night. I may be - maybe - could've saved that young man Lord, maybe I could have. And because I didn't - I thought you - made me pay, by raising his son as my own - my eldest, Shawn." Bart stopped there, thinking about his wife, a young woman, caught up in the King marches for equal rights of the Negro. So caught up, that while he was in Vietnam, she was there, falling for a black young man heavily involved in the sit ins at restaurants, water fountains, bathrooms. He knew because word spread fast in small towns, and certainly in the one he'd come from. Begging need for a leave, he'd snuck back, secretly following her, watching her, and sure enough, she'd been with him, the black boy, Edwin Piercy. He'd watched the whole time they were together, sneaking about in the secret of darkness, and then he'd dropped her off - at home, safe and sound. Jealousy and humiliation shot thru Bart that night. Thinking back, he remembered holding onto the gun, his intent to scare him off and warn that he was not to see her ever again. She was after all, his girlfriend and yes, white. The two of them messing about while he was about to be sent off to war. And then, right before he could follow through on his intent, a truck pulled up, loaded with hooded men. Bart had frozen behind the tree, watching horrified by the things they did as they surrounded him. All he had to do, was shoot his gun into the air, stop them before it was too late. Instead, the sounds of his screams made him back away, covering his ears, he rushed off deep into the woods, away from the nightmare, disappearing - heading back to the fort. The next day, he left for Vietnam. As one of the lucky ones, he was injured and sent back and in the hospital, he lay learning that his girlfriend, his wife to be, was with child.
