Description

Østerlars Roundchurch is one of 4 roundchurches on the island of Bornholm. Constuction is thought to have begun around 1150 A.D. Initially these roundchurches were not intended to have any defensive purpose, but continued raids on the island by the Wends (Slavonic tribes - Eastern Germany and Western Poland today) turned them into defensive positions for the islanders during times of raids. Østerlars is the biggest of the 4 churches and has 2 floors above groundlevel to which defenders could retreat, with supply rooms and arrow slits. From the top floor you have a grand view over most of the island.

Hey, I have a very similar shot from last summer! We did a 'grand tour' of all 4 of the roundchurches in a single day!
