Description

My inspiration for uploading Anne Hathaways cottage came from Renderosity artist DOM1 who recently uploaded a similar VUE creation, thanks! Situated in the village of shottery, a mile from Stratford, Ann Hathaway's Cottage was the home of William shakespeare's wife before they married in 1582, when she was twenty-six and he was eighteen. Her father, Richard Hathaway, was a farmer, and the family home was known as Hewlands. The house remained a working farm until the 19th century, and was lived in by Hathaways and descendants of the family for 300 years. Besides its romantic associations, as the place where the teenage Shakespeare courted his future wife, the Hathaway home has also come to be regarded as a quintessential country cottage. The view of the house from across its garden has inspired countless paintings and photographs, and represented one of the most familiar images of 'old England'. Built from timber, stone and brick, with a thatched roof that conceals its diamond-paned dormer windows. All written documentation was from Shakespeare's Houses and Gardens THE OFFICIAL GUIDE (Jarrold publishing)

I once had a jigsaw picture puzzle of this house. It was wonderful, and I put it together on more than one occasion. Lovely to know what I was looking at! (They rarely tell you.)

Here's a tale for you...Somewhere in the hands of one of my cousins, is a geneology report my grandfather spent great money to aquire and which took over 3 years to complete. In it, it claims that one of my Aunts (many time over "great") married Ann's brother and so, my family is related to William Shakespeare. A far-reaching relationship, I agree, but still... :-) These are wonderful shots of this very quaint home. BTW, both her parents died before she met William and she and her brother lived here for sometime by themselves. She was getting up in age (nearing 18, I believe) when the village began to talk about her. Marriage at an early age was common...single at the age of 20 was a disaster.
