Description

As promised (or threatened), here's the first of a few more images, these taken a couple weeks ago. In the spring of '03, the winter runoff combined with 4-5 inches or rain (or more) caused a plug to fail, bursting two of the four dams in the basin. In about a day's time, 9 billion gallons of water and over 1 million cubic meters of sediment emptied into Lake Superior, taking thousands of trees and forcing about 1800 people to evacuate. This shut down one of the two main power plants, forcing two mines to cease operation until other plants could be brought online. Fortunately, the largest of the dams held fast, otherwise the flooding would have been much more severe. Still, plenty of damage was done and this park hasn't been the same - no swimming spot means less people come through. This is what's left at the end, about a quarter mile or so (or maybe half a mile) from Lake Superior. There used to be a lot more here and where I was standing was covered in water - I think where I was standing, the water would reach my ankles - that used to move a bit faster than it does now. With the first lake in the system emptying, the entire basin is far from where it used to be, but it was decided that the dam (or dams, not sure) would be rebuilt. And once that's done, things will slowly return to where they used to be. Anyhoo... two or three more shots from my trek to follow. I still haven't quite mastered all the features of my camera, but I think these shots turned out pretty good. At least, to my eyes.

I think you have the hang of your camera just fine. :-) This is a good, rich shot. I find the tiny pastel flower a dot of magic in this.

great photo, would of loved to have seen you put your avatar in the water as if he's getting swept away.
