Description

Packed up and ready to go, my son has walking stick in hand and is ready for the hike back to civilization from our campout. The descent, the trailhead to which is just beyond the rock point in the photo, drops 3,500 vertical feet on a precipitous path -- with countless switchbacks -- that is just over one mile. There are several spots where there is a very narrow path and sheer drops of 500 to 600 feet, and even one area where the trail drops off into the canyon an estimated 1,000 feet. This little man did this on his first real hike in full pack. Yes, I'm proud. :) I felt he deserved a photo marking this milestone. The hike down, by the way, was less than 1/3 of the distance of the hike up, but it took us about the same amount of time because of the difficulty of the trail. Really fun trip. :)

I am in awe. It's an amazing photo, and must be even more amazing to see in person. Just breathtaking. Your son looks like he could pull his own weight and then some! I wish I had such a cool dad when I was growing up.

I normally don't comment on comments, particularly in light of the fact that, unless you happen to check back on on this particular photo -- which may never happen -- you'll not read the comment anyway, but I will cut and paste this into an instant message to you, A.C. Wolfe, and just say a few more words for anyone else who may happen to view this photo and comments: I am humbled that you would imply I am a cool dad. Thanks for that. Also, I feel very blessed to have grown up in Ouray, Colo. To see scenes like yours, A.C. Wolfe, brings me great joy, because you model places that remind me very much of home. Similarly, to look at the above photo and see the Imogene Basin in the distance and the fir and spruce marching down the steep slopes in the foreground can make me breathe just a bit deeper and get the feeling of being there, if only for an instant. Mountains are a wonder. I cannot get enough of them, especially nowadays when I live hours away.
