Description

I am told these are Pacific Pelicans. Last year we had 8 migrate here for about half the summer. This year there were to many to count and they stayed the whole summer. Every time I had my camera with me they managed to evade me, but not yesterday. I got one, finally. It's not a great picture, and unless I learned how to swim really fast I wasn't going to get any closer. This in the north part of Miller's Bay on Lake Winnebago, far, far away from any ocean. on the far right side is a seagull swimming just to give you an idea of the size. I don't know if this is going to full size well at all, but so far this is the best shot of these things I have gotten, and I wanted to share it. Most of us here are still in awe over these birds decided that Oshkosh was a great place to live, but then we all think that too. So who are we to judge. Thank you for looking and all the comments on my previous post. Have a great rest of your Sunday, Peace, Cheri

How utterly cool, to have them living right on your doorstep! I think I'd be tempted to learn to swim really fast if they came here:-) Hat's off to you for getting even this close!

Baby, I'd just settle for you learning how to swim, let alone real fast! It's so neat to see these birds flying in formation, I'm trying to find out where they are nesting, probably the only way we're going to get a better shot, and time is running out soooo fast. They don't winter here, and that is only a few weeks away! I'm happy that at least Cheri got a shot of one, they've been eluding here for more than just a few months now. This bird was about a good seventy yards out, putting it just within range of a Brett Farve pass. (Just to put it in perspective for the guys!) We'll get some good close ones yet!!!

Pacific Pelicans in Oshkosh? Hard to believe, but there it is, all happy and content on Lake Winnebago. Pretty good capture considering its distance from you, Cheri.

Wow ... that's too cool! Pelicans in Wisconsin ... who'da thunk?? Regardless of how close you were, it's still an amazing shot, simply for the fact that it's THERE!

Totally awesome! I needed to use that phrase again. It has been such a long time. The pelicans in Florida build nests out of sticks, on rocks. Should be easy to find a couple of weeks after they arrive next spring. See my posting of February 9, 2009 to see what to look for. It is a zoo shot but the nests should be the same. It is on page 8 of my gallery. Great capture. Dana

Cool shot Cheri! Another strangeness in the weather perhaps? Great comparison between the pelican and the seagull!

I can't say that I've ever seen a pelican in our lochs or ponds, Sylvia. This is a nice capture, just to prove that you did see one. Sometimes our cameras are just not handy, when we want to capture an event, or we find that we would really like a 30x optical zoom instead of the 3x digital zoom that's on our camera. Today, I came across a fox, in the middle of my mother-in-laws estate, where is a gap and access to a tree belt. It was a quiet, sunny afternoon, I was walking up from the main road, and I had two heavy shopping bags. Of course, my camera was at the bottom of my back pack.. ;o) The fox just took his time, did the needful, and sauntered off.. However I do see a pelican crossing at least once a day. Our pedestrian controlled road crossing lights are known as 'Pelican Crossings', since the early 1970s. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelican_crossing ) Indeed the latest ones, are known as Puffins ( Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent Crossing ), but I've not seen one here. We do have a Toucan Crossing, outside one of the primary / elementary schools. These allow pedestrians and bicycles to cross and have a green man and a green cycle which light up. Hoping that you are both well. God bless, John.
