Lovely. I can remember when Caversham Lock in Reading was still of this design. Our summer Sunday afternoons were spent 'helping' the lock keeper open the gates when I was small. Sadly, just about all of the locks have now been automated from London to just above Oxford I believe. Presumably we are keeping this style of lock on the upper Thames to keep them in a style more befitting the rural nature of the upper reaches.

Fred, you're just a photo-gongoozler! I love these canal shots, beautifully captured. Any sailers travelling down through Ashline Lock, on the Whittlesey Dike near my home town, effectively become 'submariners', as the next section of river crosses the fenland landscape at below sea level!
