Description

Today was quite the interesting day! I awoke at 6:30 am to no electric and no gas for cooking...so I went out on the front porch to wait for maintenance to get here and I was suprised as overhead came a loud huge crow and attacking him was this hawk. I watched for a couple hours as they dove into trees and one time the hawk hit the crow in plain sight but they were so fast I couldn't get a clear picture. Finally the hawk landed in this tree and I got this one shot before he took off again. To see the underneath side of his feathers, what I saw as he flew overhead please see addy below...his wings were beautiful and from tip to tip had a span of at least three feet. We have seen this bird before but he was so high up that we couldn't see clearly. Now I will hopefully catch him when he is lower.I feel very lucky to have gotten this one bad photo of him! You can see more photos of Cooper's Hawks at: http://lloydspitalnikphotos.com/v/birds_of_prey/coopers_hawk/coopers_hawk_F5R6733-Edit.jpg.html Info about Cooper's Hawk was found at http://www.all-birds.com/coopers-hawk.htm Cooper's Hawk, a raptor named after the naturalist William Cooper is 14 to 20 inches with a wing span of 2 1/4 to 3 feet. They have short wings and a long rounded tail with gray and black bands and a white band at the tip. Adults have blue gray backs, white under parts with fine, thin, reddish bars, red eyes and a black cap. The sexes look alike but females are about a third larger than the males. Younger birds brown and streaked below and the eyes are yellow. They fly with stiff, strong wing beats. They are often confused with the much smaller Sharp-Shined Hawk. Cooper's Hawks have a whiter more finely streaked breast, the legs are thicker, the head is larger and younger birds have a reddish hue on the side of their heads and nape. The Sharp-Shined Hawk's tail is square. Thanks for looking and for previous comments and favs! Note: Gas and electric back on finally!

Great capture!!! We've had one in our area for a few years now and it's so fast that I've never been able to capture a shot of it. Though I did used to have to stand outside and guard the puppies when they were little because our hawk goes after large rabbits and anything else in its path!
