Description

This is the town of Ouray, Colo. Though my wide-angle lens wasn't quite enough to get the whole town, believe it or not, what you're seeing is almost the whole town. About eight blocks long and, at its widest, perhaps seven blocks wide, when I lived there in the 1970s (My house is almost dead center of this photo.), there were 800 people living there. There are some beautiful historical buildings, which I should have gotten photos of for the benefit of my friends on Renderosity -- just didn't get the time this trip -- that I'll try to put up some day. The waterfall in the left background is called Cascade Falls. As you come back into town from the waterfall, near the road that appears to go the falls, you'll see a large tan colored building. That is where Ouray Schools are, grades kindergarten through 12th grade. In my time, we had about 19 students in my class, and we were the largest grade level. Most classes averaged numbers in the teens, but none in those days exceeded 20 per grade level, so there were about 200 students K-12. My house is a half a block from the school to the right and is all but lost in the trees that are in front of it. I circled it in the thumbnail of this photo, but it is hard to recognize as a house even then. Most of the homes, like ours, are from the Victorian era. Ours was actually pretty large, with 13 rooms and 2 baths. It had served as, among other things, a boarding house under a couple of owners, but usually was just a single family dwelling. It and the homes in my neighborhood were all built in the 1890s. The large building with the square tower, visible on the extreme right of this photo, is the Beaumont Hotel. It was built in the 1890s also and is a true jewel of Victorian architecture, with an open space in the hotel's center that is almost four stories high that is covered with a large skylight. There was a large clock on the ornate staircase leading up from the lobby that was over a story tall, when the hotel was first built. Really a nice building. Just outside the photo farther to the right, just a half block away, is the Elks Club. The lodge number is 492, and it is a really nice historical building, too. I spent a lot of time there as a youngster. I was a pinsetter in their two-lane, semi-automatic bowling alley. Good money for a kid. The County Courthouse was the one they used for some scenes early on in the famous John Wayne movie called True Grit. Anyway, just thought I'd put this in for a change of pace. I was blessed to live in a small and beautiful town like this, I think.

This is how I always imagined many small American Townships. Clean, tree lined streets, space to grow and surrounded with spectacular scenery. You were very fortunate and it is a superb photograph. Thanks so much for sharing this part of your life.
