Description

I needed a break from the dead zone that I recognize as the far South Side of Chicago; as the weekend blossomed around me, I felt the need to do something akin to what I did in Prague, and in Dortmund, and in Chicago, when Corey lived north. In short, I needed a form of stimulation that can only come from people who are familiar with the finer things in life: conversation, usually involving words that are composed of both vowels and consonants...humor (usually of the sort that does not require degredation of others)...food, of a sort that comes from cafes and restaurants in which your orders are not placed through bullet proof glass, or where those same orders aren't passed to you through miniature negative pressure airlocks for mice, or something like that. In short, I was desperate for something a bit more in line with my temperament and personality. What I got was a fantastic night spent in conversation with a friend. We watched the movie Contact on cable television, after enduring something gratiutiously violent and filled with that red corn syrup stuff that looks all too real. We gave that movie a miss, despite the giggles inspired by Snoop Dogg with blond braids. We drank beer. We laughed. We talked about the Czech Republic, Russia, Chicago, Wisconsin, and life in places that are not here. We talked about heath issues and writing, and we even talked about Chickens. I didn't get to meet the chickens until this morning. Six of them. One rooster and a gaggle of hens. Lucky Rooster! Anyway, I saw Chickens today. Urban Chickens who live in a well-appointed coop on Chicago's north side. They have pretty swanky digs...and good company, as a neighbor also has chickens in a coop. I found myself intrigued by the avian members of the household I visited, and was even treated to the sight of the most gregarious of hens retiring to her little nesting spot to lay an egg. It's not every day a city guy gets share company with an egg-laying hen. Needless to say, this day started off excellently, and so posting at least one Funky Chicken picture is the least I can do to capture so much of this rare day in the windy city. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you're all on the verge of a great weekend.

Chickens can be pretty fascinating to watch, even though their brains are reputedly very tiny...my sister has four of them in a coop with a very muddy and stinky little completely fenced in yard (there are many coyotes in the woods there!) I like talking to them, they get very excited when I speak pidgin-chicken. I guess I'm probably making some huge grammatical gaffes, like probably mentioning that I EAT eggs rather than excrete them! Sounds like a great time was had by all on your weekend.

LOVE the image! The light is perfect, and the clarity is amazing, given how fast chickens can move. It's a grand avian portrait, and I'm so glad you got to have the experience! It sounds like you got your soul fed, as well as your curiosity. An unbeatable combination!

A fascinating story, Chip. Seeing something worth recording in a chicken yard takes a special vision. This image is excellent on several levels - there's humor in the rooster's look - like he thinks you're making a move on one of his hens. There's the excellent lighting and sharpness of the image. And there's the entertwining of the narrative that brought you to this point. Great job overall.

A wonderful story and love the shot. My neighbors have horses and chickens and a rooster, so I get my share of these fascinating creatures up in the mountains. CC

I used to have chickens and they are really fun creatures. One time I was using a bunch of rubber bands to hold something together and when I reached down to grab a few more, they were gone. The chickens had eaten them, thinking they were worms!! Course that has nothing to do with anything, but I love your foto. I also have this picture in my mind of all of us doing the "funky chicken"--cock-a-doodle_doo!!

Wonderful to hear the tale of your well-spent evening, your descriptive powers are a joy, as ever! I should love to keep chickens, and could give them a fox-proof run, but my neighbours are uber-urban! They don't like any NATURAL noises.

Excellent movie 'Contact'. It is one of the more thoughtful sci-fi movies to come out of the 90's. From the novel by Carl Sagan no less, "Billions and billions". Toronto is seriously looking at revising its bylaws to allow chickens to be raised (again) within the city. Thanks to Mel Lastman, the last farms were banished out of what is now called the City of Toronto about 25 years ago. Many people already keep chickens on their properties for things like fresh eggs. But what a face! You caught those sexy crimsons perfectly. Well, sexy for the hans anyways.

That's such a great photo, I'm glad you had a good day. Like others, I think that the movie "Contact" is one of the better scifi movies that's come out of Hollywood. I wish they'd understood Sagan's more nuanced concept of religion and science than they did in their screenplay, but it is Hollywood, after all. What I like in this photo is partly the stark red/white contrasts in the rooster, but even more, the way he's right up there, checking you out and running interference on behalf of "his" hens. Don't mess with MY harem, he seems to be declaring. Wonderful shot.

As Robert De Niro would say: "talkin' to me ?", that's how interprete this pic...he probably can see his mirror image in your camera lens and thought to himself, 'hmmm...must try another angle or change my tone' ! Fun addition... Cheers BB
