Description

This is another scene from the school feast and it's for Cheri (elfin14doaks), to wish her well. Here I experimented dislocation in the time-space, putting together two shots into one. It isn't a duplication, but a holistic, contemporary view of an action and its (very close) future. Which in some way illustrates some musings buzzing around inside my skull for some time. Actually since some artists here posted questions about purist photography in the forum. It's a pity only few people share the forum (I can't throw the 1st stone for sure). Is a photo manipulated with a computer program stll a photo or something else? What is a photo, BTW? only the unmanipulated, technically perfect reproduction of reality, or an interpretaion of it? There are a number of problems about this issue. The first patron in the late Middle Ages, who asked for a flat Madonna and got one with the first perspective probably was shocked. Art is also innovation, and until some decades ago photography was not considered art, but craft. Another problem is that the word artist is used in a much looser way in the US than in Europe, and craftspeople are usually called artists. In Italy they aren't. In Italy, one who owns a 1000 euros camera, knows all the instruction booklet by heart, attendeded and even taught in photography courses, has published amd makes technically perfect photos, this person is still a craftsperson. One that owns a 100 euros camera, knows the technique well (within the limits of a cheap camera), but adds a quantum of something perceived as 'art' by means of computer manipulation, in Italy is considered an artist. With that I don't want to say that I'm an artist, only a wannabe one! If I manage to find the forum thread on it I'll post my ranting also there. Beware: more to come. Thanks for your kind comments.

Lovely photo and dedi. Nice joining of the two pictures. What is art is a very subjective thing. You can think of obvious examples of extremes. The person screwing one item on an assembly line obviously isn't, while the person who designs and builds from scratch a city sculpter (with all kinds of things screwed into it) is. But in the middle there is a lot of ambiguity and flat out difference of opinion. Perhaps art is what moves you. I think people can get bogged down with labels, limit their variety and forget to enjoy life. For many only actors of the theatre were true artists, and opera or classical were the only proper music choices for a true artist. How limiting is that?

fabulous image. discussion about art can be endless. there was a quote somewhere, "nature is how you see things and art is when you make things like you want them to see" can't remember the exact words and the source

Art is attitude. Art is emotion. Art is creativity. You are certainly an artist! An interesting picture and very kind dedication for Cheri.

first, ditto for Cheri, I truly hope she comes through this with shining colors. She's a fine person & has a wonderful gallery. All power to her! Second, a lovely dedi, and another of your typically playful yet serious uploads. I did my graduate work in the very questions you raise, so if I responded, I'd take up half the site (lol). But if you take a photographic image and create something new from it & it embodies human experience, emotion, sight (etc etc) in its forms, I'd say you're making a work of art. It doesn't matter that your final image isn't the 'original photographs': In this case, the original photographs were starting points, like an underpainted-sketch is the starting point for an oil painting. And the more stringent definitions in Europe will probably lessen with time...artistic expression is too vast to be kept too close to one's vest. Whether all art is "great" art is another matter (and it, too, is very subjective). We even asked the question: "If a bird sings a complex song, is it art?" And there wasn't a single answer. Maybe the bird had expressive intent at some deep level of its brain—ie, other than sexual posturing, calling the flock, etc etc. But then: Even if it "only" intended sexual posturing, etc, isn't part of our art sexual posturing, relating to our flock, etc? The bird's song-instinct might be closer to our art-instinct than we know. So I tend to be very liberal about "art". But hey, as we say in America: That's just me, lol... Your image is seamless and fun and fascinating, and evokes subtle thought. Photographers all the way back to Muybridge made montages of various moving shots: It was just a question of technology finally allowing us to put them into seamless 'wholes'—which you did here. Lovely piece, I like the ceremony of the three women to begin with, and your montage of them plays with time very deftly. I had to look a few times & it all unfolded. Always a thoughtful upload from you. Fine work.

I love reading your commentaries as much as I love looking at your brilliant photography. The debate about what constitutes art will always rage for as long as people have opinions. It's an interesting, endlessly fascinating topic. What I love about this photo is the artistry of it, so to speak...it evokes a number of connections and feelings in my mind. Firstly, I'm a HUGE fan of science fiction and an admirer of Frank Herbert's Dune novels. What strikes me about this image is how the figures here remind me of members of Herbert's "Bene Gesseritt Sisterhood" major players in all of the Dune novels. Beyond the science fictional reference, there's the pure visual element of this, the intensity of the color and the sense of motion (or slippage in time.) There's so much to think about and explore in both words and image that this image is one I will revisit numerous times. And it's even better that it's dedicated to Cheri! I love it as much as I'm sure she does, and I can just picture her smile (and hear her little giggle) when she first saw this.
