Description

well how would you like to wake up to this in you garden court every morning ! If you've been to the festival Burning Man in Nevada, then you have seen Michael Christian's handiwork. The 44-year-old Oakland artist is well respected at this fest for his wild and dizzying 40-foot-tall metal sculptures. Some resemble fire-breathing aliens, others look like serpentine coils diving through the sand. Recently, Christian travelled to Toronto to create his first work in Canada. Invited by the Distillery District, in the southeast end of the city, Christian was commissioned to place two of his pieces in the District. For three years, his creatures named IT and Koilos will stand silently as pedestrians meander through the popular tourist spot. The 14-foot-tall Koilos could be out of a Del Toro film: a creature in the crouching position has a head fringed with flames, giving the impression of a monster eager to pounce. It was made with 2,000 pounds of steel.

Thanks for the info! I stumbled across these sculptures a few weeks ago, taking some out-of-town friends to the Distillery District (as a 'local', I rarely go there myself), but couldn't find any info about them - so, I appreciate the information about the artist!

Am I the only one who thinks it ironic that something that is guaranteed to sober you up is located in the distillery (as in alcohol) district? Maybe I'll postpone my trip to Toronto for, I don't know, maybe three more years! Excellent capture of a most unusual sculpture.
