Description

Do you remember several months ago when I went to Lopez Island with a bunch of my girlfriends? I've still got photos to show you from that trip! (And more from MooseRidge, and more from the Trifecta ... it just never ends!) The foundation for this church was laid in 1887, and the building was completed in 1889. And yes, for those of you in far off lands, this is a wooden building and a wooden fence. We have big trees here, so that's what we build with. :) I never knew that was unusual until I showed this picture to a friend from another country who was totally blown away that I was showing him a photograph of a building that was made of wood! The ensuing conversation was quite fascinating, I assure you. Having friends in other parts of the world can be an expanding experience, and that was one of them! :)

Stunning conversion to B&W, great contrast. Why is the church scene with Brad and Janet jumping to mind...?! Cheers, Clive

I love these old wooden buildings. You have captured it very well. Very 'New Englandy'.

it's so hard to choose when I've been absent so long, I wind up feeling I've let a lot of gems down. I always zoom, but so often in your gallery you post small enough that the display & zoom-sizes are identical. And the realization hits: This doesn't need any emendation. First, your color sense is always impeccable. The sepias & stark whites are perfect. Second, the composition is a simple angled foreground sweeping into the front of this church, and the 'counterpoint' of directions is perfect. Third, the church, due to your stark white, feels monumental in its own small way, even though it also feels small & intimate & dear (as such a small structure should). And last, the stark sky makes it as much a print (even an abstract) as a realistic capture; and it silhouettes the trees beautifully and starkly. But for the subject material, it could almost pass for Japanese. It's beautiful, feels like its age, and feels—ala Bill—like Maine as much as the upper west coast. Beautifully done and presented. A real gem.
