Description
These Mape, or Polynesian Chestnut Trees, are standing at the site of the Ahu-O-Mahine Marae at the base of Mt. Tohiea (1207m) in the Opunohu Valley, Moorea.
The trunk and root complex of these trees grow in fanning wings which are often covered with green moss.
Historically the natives would use the wings of the trunk as drums, by hitting it with a rock. The sound produced has a sharp, cracking quality of great volume causing echoes that could be heard over a great distance.
