Description

This is an old print of a pretty rare bird taken at the CAF hanger in Harlingen, Texas sometime in the 1980s. The F-82, (or P-82 prior to June 1948) Twin Mustang was just that - two P-51H Mustang fuselages put together to make an ultra long range fighter for the Pacific war. The Packard-Merlin engines drove "handed" props that rotated in opposite directions to cancel torque, just like the P-38 Lightning. Too late to see service in WWII, the F-82 served as a nightfighter and scored the USAF's first air to air victories in the Korean War on June 27, 1950 over Kimpo Airport downing a Yak-11 and two La-7s. Speed: 460 MPH (740 KM) Range: 2500 miles (4000 KM) Arms: six .50 cal machine guns, with hard points for rockets, bombs, drop tanks and the "long dong" radar pod.

Nice! VERY Rare bird indeed. We made a trip to the Air Force Museum in Ohio when I was a kid and got a pic of my mother in front of their twin mustang, appropriately named "Betty Jo", which is my mother's name.

Oh this is too cool! I am familiar with the P-38. It's one of my favorites. My all time favorite is the Mustang. But this...I've even heard of it. Nice capture. One or two pilots?

Nice shot! looks good in black.... I've heard and I believe it true, that this aircraft has been 'taken' back by the US Air Force Museum.... It was on long term loan... May be wrong but believe it true... Rob

@wysywig: It was two seater with a pilot in one cockpit and a copilot/radar operator in the other. BTW this print didn't scan well, so I had to do quite a bit of photoshop work on it.

Fascinating Rog. Rob or I will pop up a photo of the one in the USAF Museum dated June 2009. Who knows, it may be the same aircraft 25-30 years later.
