Description


"Thorney" A 1908 Steam Fire Engine. It is known to have been on The Duke of Bedfords estate at Thorney in Cambridgeshire before the 2nd world war. During the war it came under the control of the national fire service and was based at Thorney fire station.The original cost was about £450. The pump is rated to deliver 250 gallons of water per minute. With a good pair of horses a speed of 12 m.p.h. could be achived for about 1 mile. Steam was raised from cold in 9 minutes.

I live 6 miles south of Thorney! I've seen thi fire pump before and it works hard moving water at high volume and pressure. Great shot thanks for sharing it with us all.
