Description

Taken at an air show in Sioux Falls, SD in July 2009. I was using a 650-1300 mm lens without IS, shooting from the crowd along the flight line. At original resolution, you can zoom in on the right propeller and see that the cone on the front is duct taped in place. This would be consistent with how many of these bombers took off in WWII, when parts weren't always available, yet the missions had to be flown.

Actually, there is a fair amount of hydraulic pressure behind that dome working on the pitch control piston, so I would doubt it's simply taped on. It's probably taped to minimize the mess from a slight oil leak. Trivia: The two pedal like things behind the turret's gun muzzles are steel plates (usually seen with sheet metal fairings) designed to give the tail gunner some confidence. Aside from the odd antennas and lights (and the lack of a real turret and the switch back to a collector exhaust for the top cylinders if one insists on nitpicking - lol) this aircraft presents itself as rather authentic, the bare metal really helps in this regard. Great shot!
