Description

this is the first floor of the building. The office is on the first floor as it will not interfer with the house living area upstares. the bricks was all made here on the plantation. they are soft bricks and they needed to be protected from water in the air. it like 90% water in the air at all times here most the time. this is why the bricks is painted white. there is areas where the the paint is off and the bricks is falling apart as red dust. thank you very much

Nice photo, you didn't let it get too dark or too bright, which is why my indoor shots never work right... Interesting bit on the bricks, too. Sounds like they didn't fire them in a hot enough kiln. (or, as alot of bricks from that time period were done, they built them into a big furnace and piled wood inside to "fire" in a more literal sense, the bricks. That's very common for locally-made bricks from that time period. I studied colonial period archeology in school, and we spent weeks on how to recognize and date bricks by their firing process. Kinda dull to some, but for me it was fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

Great photo Jock and it really is amazing how great a job they did building these old plantations. I had no idea they made the bricks right there, it must have taken a long time. Also I didn't know about the water in the air being so high, it must be hard to keep things from falling apart

Terrific lighting effects in this shot, Jock! It'll be expensive, but they gotta replace those bricks with the latest oven baked ones. If not, the lovely home will come tumbling down and we'll lose a venerated bit of Southern history.
