The nickname "Innovari" (meaning innovation or renewal in Latin) has been with me since I came across Syd Mead's prototype car design of the same name in his wonderful book "Sentinel." This work, with its air of "a new era of design"—along with the works of many SF and fantasy illustrators (such as Chris Foss, Peter Elson, Angus McKie, Chris Moore, Jim Burns, and Fred Gambino)—drove me over the years to do my own artwork.
"Fantastic fiction" always had a remarkable weight in my whole personal and professional life. I have been a professional SF author, I edited a fantasy and horror movie magazine, and for ten years have been chief modelmaker in my own special effects company.
In the last decade my creativity has leaned towards computer graphics and 3D illustrations in particular—with which I wanted to create professional artworks for books and magazines. I'm happy to say that in recent years this objective has been fulfilled, with many works sold worldwide to private and corporate clients.
Currently I'm building my worlds in Bologna, Italy, where I share a home with my wife Raffaella and our cats Leeloo and Merlin.

Nicely put together! Great ambiance lighting!

"My God! It's full of stars!" Nice take on this story, although in the movie they had to dig a big hole to find it. Very nicely done, right down to the space suit.

Very nice! I've read the 2001 novel and have seen the movie, never read the short story, but I really like this take on the discovery of the monolith!

Don't touch that monolith, man! (Or should i say Bowman)? It'll fry your brain or send you to an alternate universe! Anyways, awesome work, mate!

For those who have not read the tale, a PDF can be found at http://econtent.typepad.com/TheSentinel.pdf The Sentinel as described was "a glittering, roughly pyramidal structure, twice as high as a man, that was set in the rock like a gigantic, many-faceted jewel". The astronaut-mountaineers who discovered it were unable to touch it as it was surrounded by a force field. Discrepancies aside, this image works fine as a hybrid of story and film.

I love this, Perfect!! I to am a big fan of the Space Odyssey series and have uploaded a couple of renders as a tribute to it.

Excllent image! Great work on the spacesuit and the sky. My only nit is if the sun is really where the lens flare shows it, the Earth would be a very thin crescent.
Raddar
One of your very best, IMHO. Excellent work.
JOELGLAINE
The Earth should be a crescent, and the Sentinel is a tetrahedron, not a monolith. Not withstanding--a good piece of work.

cool sci-fi scene - great lighting!

Fantastic...a wonderful homage to both the classic movie AND the story on which it's based. I love the way both are interwoven here...I always thought that the monoliths were more visually arresting than the original tetrahedron...I don't know why, I guess it's just because the monolith shape looks like God's own stereo speakers. Fantastic work.

Excellent scene for the story.
Seaview123
Very nice looking render. You did credit to Arthur's iconic story.
zorzim
That should be rendered again with the 2001 movie setup... you did that scene before ! It would be good to have another render in the movie setting. Sure the alien object should be a tetrahedron like in the original "Sentinel" - on the other hand it can be more visually appealing this way
