Description
Saw these in a vender's tent at the civil war reenactment, where one could buy just about anything necessary to become a reenactor. (Not my bag, I've enough with my photo hobby.)
It was pretty interesting to see, although how the women manage those hoop skirts is beyond me, I could just see me accidentally knocking over end tables every time I tried to sit down!
I might be tempted to take up the hatwearing as I did see the following info on hatpins while browsing the subject online...
"Though we rarely see them today, hat pins were once an accessory that women simply could not be without. In the Victorian era, when appearance was everything, it just wouldn't do for a fashionable lady's hat to blow off in the wind.
Designed to go through the crown of the hat and into the elegant hair twists worn by the ladies of the day, hatpins were less about fashion than they were about necessity.
Unlike some collectibles, hat pins have some rather unique historic milestones to their name. In the early 1900's, popular music hall actresses in America and Britain made popular the wearing of enormous, heavy hats that required a sturdy pin to keep in place. To hold these ornate confections, longer pins were introduced until around 1908, when a series of laws were introduced to limit the size of these "deadly weapons."
Fearing that suffragettes would use their hatpins as weapons, the legal length was limited to 9 inches from end to end and many women were forced to trim down their pins (and tone down their hats!) to stay within the law."

Good heavens ... whatever else you do, don't arm the women! :P I wonder if it was okay for a woman to carry a gun while wearing an 8" hat pin? Aside from all that ... this is a wonderful shot! I love the light and glass (of course) and those hat pins are fabulous!
