Description

I had originally planned on posting a somewhat different picture, but I had an interesting encounter today, with a cicada. I’ve always has an interest in those noisy, annual insects, and in the past, I never had a camera handy. I never captured any, on film or digitally. Today, however, that situation changed, as I hovered around outside of the internet café I visit. I’d gone for a smoke break and to look for subjects to photograph. What I found—to my endless joy—was a cicada just doing what cicadas do best. Well, I don’t know what this one was doing, but he (she?) looked so intent. Basically, he (she?) was simply standing still. Chicago is one of those temperate cities that gets 17 year cicadas, but we also get cicadas every summer here. They’re not the red eyed magicicadian critters; instead, the annuals have bluish-gray eyes and more pointed back ends. They don’t seem as big either, but they’re impressive, nonetheless. So, in honor of Cicadas, I’m posting this specimen. As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting, and I hope everyone is having a great week! I'd also like to wish safe travels to those about to embark on a journey east.

I didn't know there were annual cicadas. I only know the really big ones that live as a larva for 15 years until they become adults and make the god awful high pitched noise. I have caught a glimpse of the big one but I was at work and did not have my camera on me. Do these make that awful high pitched noise too???

Wow! I've never even heard of an annual Cicada, nor have I ever gotten the chance to see the other larger type. hear them all of the time, just can't figure out where the heck the noise they make is coming from. It's almost like they do that in surround sound, coming from everywhere. That face reminds me of a certain fish, (the name escapes me) found only in the darkest deepest depths of the ocean, with big pointy teeth. Certainly an interesting looking bug, be it a him or her. I'm guessing a her, because it looks like it could blend in real well, certainly not the norm in the animal kingdom for a male. Awesome shot, just awesome!

This is a great shot! How funny, for me to be getting around to seeing it on RR, when you already showed it to me last night and we've talked about it in person. (I still can't get over that ... what a fantastic evening that was!) :D

Lucky you. Our perennial insects are june bugs and fish flies. Not so charming and smelly when they all reach the end of their life cycle all on the same day. Excellent photograph my friend. Nice sharp detail and vibrant colour. I love his (her) hooked feet and that bulbous eye.
