Description

This gun is located at the pier at Vaiare, Moorea. While I was waiting for the ferry to Tahiti I roamed around and took pictures. This gun caught my eye. It was just there with several scooters parked around it. I would have ignored it if I hadn't seen the AN 1829 on the barrel. This raised my interest, so I took a picture. When I returned from this trip I tried to find information about its origin and I had a difficult time finding anything. Finally I found a French article and gathered the following information: Since the 1992 ongoing planning and upgrading of the Papeete Port Facilities almost 30 guns have been located. This particular gun was found under a 2 meter layer of silt in the Tipearui River. Apparently this gun is a howitzer model 1827. It is apparently a French naval gun with a 2.95 meter long barrel. No other information was available. This picture was taken on 14 August 2009. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig...

Great capture and interesting find and result of your research. Rob might be right but the French could of dumped the guns into the river after deciding that they would not hold the area against the British as well.

Great find and capture. That is one heck of a long barrel for 1829. Wouldn't want to be standing behind it, when fired. Dana
