Description

I had not had a good day. My new boyfriend, who had been blowing hot and cold in a bewildering manner, had stood me up again. He had been due to come over to my house and we were to spend the day together. It was now late afternoon and he was a no show. Having no house phone, and cell phones being far in the future, I had gone out to the British call box and called him. No answer. I was angry, hurt, and fighting emotion. I decided a nice walk was in order. With Shadow, my housemate’s blue merle collie and Tasha, my Havana brown cat, I started off towards Stow Longa’s twelfth century parish church. As I walked down the shady lane leading to the church, I felt my emotional turmoil begin to ease. I had lived in England for about a year, and had never felt so emotional a connection to a place as I had to the British Isles. The scenery, the history, the play of light, enriched me on a visceral level. I paused a while in the churchyard with its drunkenly leaning headstones, then continued down the lane. Soon the pavement became dirt, furrowed by deep tractor ruts which would become huge puddles in wet weather. The wooded path gave way to open farmland. Twilight fell as we walked on, shading the landscape into variations of blue. The strong emotion in me had faded, leaving only a hint of melancholy that was perfectly in tune with my surroundings. The song Melancholy Man by the Moody Blues began meander through my brain. "I'm a melancholy man, that's what I am, All the world surrounds me, and my feet are on the ground. I'm a very lonely man, doing what I can, All the world astounds me and I think I understand That we're going to keep growing, wait and see. When all the stars are falling down Into the sea and on the ground, And angry voices carry on the wind, A beam of light will fill your head And you'll remember what's been said By all the good men this world's ever known." The words weaved their magic and an intense calm awareness came over me. As sometimes happens when I listen to well loved songs, I began to feel the beauty deep down to my very bones. I walked toward a favorite tree at the top of a gently sloping field. The field was freshly plowed by the tractor still resting in a corner. Shadow was a ghostly figure further down the path while Tasha’s little dark body was close by, fully extended as she investigated an interesting sound in the grass. Reaching the tree I stood still, enjoying a soft breeze that whispered around me. As the sky darkened, the blue tones deepened. I stood there, feet widely spaced, arms stretched and hands open, feeling a strong , wondrous connection with my surroundings, as if we were merging together. I felt as if I, like Daphne of Greek mythology, might grow roots and remain fixed to this spot. I gave and received energy and sustenance, entering into the land and drawing the land into me. The essence of the tractor, the rich turned soil, the tall tree, Shadow, Tasha, and so much more, flowed through me. I felt loved , alive, and so connected. While I have never had so strong an experience again, I sometimes have fleeting echoes. Something will alert my senses and I feel a hint of that universal connection that I experienced, so intensely, that day. My comments echo all the above, myrrh! Stellar bit of narrative! Boyfriends can be so irresponsible and insensitive. And I'm a guy, a really old one, but a guy.

Ok, now I'm really, really impressed! Yesterday it was that fantastic painting you're working on, and today I find you're an excellent writer, and before I knew about all these special talents of yours, you were to me, a superb photographer. OK, I know enough about writing to know that was a run on sentence, but holy moly lady, you are so talented. Wonderful story and perfect description I can fully empathize with.

a most impressive literary debut, my friend! you've turned out some truly beautiful phrases that drew me into who you were that day - that mystical moment - and that is the clearest definition of successful writing that i know. do continue...!
