Description
The pagoda is, possibly, one of the best known features of Kew Gardens
Designed and built by Sir William Chambers and completed in 1762, it originally sported a roof of varnished iron plates with 80 dragons, one on each corner, carved from wood and gilded with real gold.
The iron plates have long since been replaced by slate and the dragons vanished. Rumour has it that they were sold to pay off some of George IV's debts but it seems more likely that they simply rotted away.
