Description

I'd like to dedicate this very famous Perseus in the Vatican to David (Fred255), whose work as a moderator in the Photography Forum I have appreciated very much. In particular, I'd like to thank him for his British humour and understatement. In addition, he made me look at rubbish and kitchen stuff with a different eye, and I'm grateful for that. I hope that the Challenge of the Month will continue. I'm sure that the new moderator, Mrs. Lubner, one of my favourite artists, will be perfect. I'll miss, however, David's quiet charm. And I cannot help wondering whether, with David's leaving, the Pond is a few inches wider. Antonio Canova (1757-1822) was a sculptor from the Republic of Venice who became famous for his marble sculptures that delicately rendered nude flesh. The epitome of the neoclassical style, his work marked a return to classical refinement after the theatrical excesses of Baroque sculpture. Among Canova's heroic compositions, there is his Perseus with the Head of Medusa. Perseus was the hero who killed Medusa and claimed Andromeda, having rescued her from a sea monster. The moment of representation is when the hero, flushed with conquest, displays the head of the "snaky Gorgon", whilst the right hand grasps a sword of singular device. By a public decree, this fine work was placed in one of the rooms of the Vatican reserved for the most precious works of antiquity. Thank you for your kind comments.

Thank you. My humour was never appreciated by most on here. I think although the words may be the same the language is very different.
