Description
"Shine On, Harvest Moon" is the name of a popular early-1900s song credited to Jack Norworth and his wife Nora Bayes. It was one of a series of moon related Tin Pan Alley songs of the era. The song was debuted by the composers in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1908 to great acclaim. It became a pop standard, still very familiar some 40 years later, and continues to be performed and recorded occasionally into the 21st century.
First verse
The night was mighty dark so you could hardly see,
For the moon refused to shine.
Couple sitting underneath a willow tree,
For love they did pine.
Little maid was kinda 'fraid of darkness
So she said, "I guess I'll go."
Boy began to sigh, looked up at the sky,
And told the moon his little tale of woe
[edit]
Chorus
Oh, Shine on, shine on, harvest moon
Up in the sky;
I ain't had no lovin'
Since January, April, June or July.
Snow time ain't no time to stay
Outdoors and spoon;
So shine on, shine on, harvest moon,
For me and my gal.
The harvest moon is the moon at and about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox. The Harvest moon is often mistaken for the modern day Hunter's moon. In the legend of the Harvest moon, it is said that all full moons have their own special characteristics based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that these moons are visible. The full moons of September, October and November as seen from the northern hemisphere — which correspond to the full moons of March, April and May as seen from the southern hemisphere — are well known in the folklore of the sky.

Beautiful capture and motif, Richard. Stunning atmosphere and light. The gentle song goes well with the atmosphere in the image. I like the Nat King Cole version, of Harvest Moon from Youtube. A great old jazz song.. prolly used in a lotta movies.

It's almost like the clouds parted so you could shoot the moon. This is very gorgeous! I didn't know that history about the Harvest and Hunter moons. Thanks for the knowledge.

Great image-- about as close as I am going to get to seeing the harvest moon here in Massachusetts. We are sopped in with dense fog and torrential rains. There is already snow falling up in the saddleback mountains, and it looks like a real Al Gore global warming. Like he knows anything. Good capture Richard!!!!!

Beautiful capture of moon and glowing clouds! I remember the song from old movies. Pretty sure I've seen it sung by Judy Garland and another time by Bing Crosby. Great info on the different full moons!
