Description

This great mural is part of a series painted by a group of artists, some from Padova, others from Milan, I was lucky enough to meet last spring. It is near the railway station and at a spitting distance from my home. I dedicate this one to Dennis (Sea_Dog) for his birthday, which was yesterday. Captain Nemo is a fictional character featured in Jules Verne's novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and The Mysterious Island (1874). Nemo, one of the most famous Anti-heroes in fiction, is a mysterious figure. He is a scientific genius who roams the depths of the sea in his submarine, the Nautilus. Nemo is Latin for "no one", and also Greek for I give what is due. When Jules Verne visited Scotland he may have been influenced by the Scottish motto Nemo me impune lacessit (No-one provokes me unpunished) reinterpreted as Nemo provokes me unpunished. The story of Captain Nemo was one of my favourite ones when I was a child, and I watched most of its movie versions, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)included.
