Description
Last Saturday early in the morning Julia and I got up about 4 hours after we went to bed and set out in the dark for Elmwood Cemetery here in Memphis for a pre-arranged pre-sunrise shoot of this delightful, picturesque, old historic cemetery.
Yes, we must be crazy.
At least it damn sure seemed that way when the alarm clock went off so early on a Saturday morning (of all days!). Surely even the alarm clock must have assumed somehow in a wine stupor the previous evening the wrong settings had been chosen.
But all was as intended. And to help ease the pain we came prepared bringing scrambled eggs, coffee & donuts in tow with our cameras and assorted equipment. So with all that to consume it would have been difficult to have had a bad experience.
And we did not, although we'd have loved to enjoy a few clouds in the sky (absolutely none!). Never-the-less it was a memorable, productive experience.
This is looking due east about 20 to 30 minutes or so before sunrise. It was still quite dark all around except for the pinkish glow in the eastern sky. Waiting for a sunrise is even more exhilarating than waiting for a sunset. You have a head start on the day even before the sound of the starting gun. And you've invested (perhaps sacrificed) so much more into it than you would for a sunset.
And as a respected photographer once told me a long time ago, "Tourists shoot sunsets. Photographers shoot sunrises". Well, I suppose shooting a sunrise doesn't really make you a "real" photographer, whatever that is, but I must admit that at 30 minutes before sunrise we didn't see a single tourist out there. And they DO go to Elmwood Cemetery.
That's enough useless information and ramblin' thoughts for now!
Thanks for stopping by!

I'm afraid if I see a sunrise, it usually means I haven't gone to bed yet. I admire your fortitude and stamina. It paid off, this is a lovely image!
