The day they returned, Lord Jobil called for a grand gala to mark Galen's safe return from distant lands. Aranée was stunned to learn the affair would also honor her - as representative of the Disputed Lands.
She had confronted wild creatures and bad men of all types, but none had frightened her as much as this event. Village celebrations and dances were nothing like this. Men and women had been scurrying about for days in anticipation. She saw the special dresses the women were preparing, how they fussed with their hair and enhanced their looks - and she knew she was out of her league. She was quite skilled in many areas, but had absolutely no knowledge of things such as this. She considered simply not attending the gala, but she had become quite fond of Lord Jobil and could not bring herself to be so rude to him.
She was glumly surveying the inner courtyard, trying to decide which of the women to approach for advice when her eyes flew wide open. "M'Lady, M'Lady!" She cried running into the crowd.
The woman she had hailed stopped and turned, saying, "Who calls me M'Lady" in an irritated voice.
Aranée stopped short, and stood transfixed. Before her stood a beautiful dark Elf woman.
"Well?" The woman asked again, hands on hips, eyes narrowing. Then her expression softened as she took in Aranée's features.
Aranée slowly reached out as if to touch her face. "It has been s-so very long... Like me, yet unlike." Aranée shuddered and addressed the woman in halting common Elvish: "I am sorry, I did not mean to be so rude. It has been a very long time... since I have seen... another Elf."
The woman's demeanor softened as she replied in the same tongue. "In Jobil City, M'Lady is reserved for ladies of the court, and I am definitely not one of those. My name is Mubela, Mubela L'oame."
Aranée stammered, "I am sorry. You are so beautiful, I just thought... Oh, I AM sorry, I am SO rude. My name is Aranée D'mere." She hesitantly held out her hand.
Mubela's eyes crinkled and a broad smile crept across her face as she took Aranée's hand. "That is quite all right Aranée, I know who you are. Everybody in Jobil City knows who you are. And it has been quite a while since I have seen another Elf, too. Now what can I do for you?"
Aranée felt warmth flood her cheeks. "You are so lovely and... I am guest of honor at the gala, I have no suitable dress, I know nothing of hair... Or makeup... Or anything... I need help..." Her voice trailed into silence.
Mubela looked at Aranée toe-to-head, stopping at her hopeful expression. Her smile burst into radiance. "Why yes, I think I CAN help you..." She took Aranée by the arm and began guiding her through the bustling courtyard. "First we visit a dear friend who is about your size, then on to a special shop in town. I am sure we can fix you up with exactly what you need..."

Many thanks to my friend PhilW for a fantastic tip: Loretta Lorez, available at Daz 3d. This low-res figure is SO amazingly versatile: She was used for all three of the background characters in this image - including the blacksmith!!! One of the most expensive 3d characters I've purchased - and WELL worth every penny.

Sorry to have been so long between visits. This is a lovely episode! I like it when characters who are so competent in most areas, have to deal with a situation that is totally alien to them. Excellent dialog! I like when she is rushing headlong into speech and stops herself to apologize and follow the protocol of giving her name in return for Mubela's. Nice image with great expressions and poses. Mubela's guarded expression is perfect. Wonderful attention to detail! I especially like the too women in the back who are in a very animated discussion.

LOL! Another twist to the story. You've got my head spinning now, mate. Love this new character, and the interaction between the two Elves. Also, Aranées reaction to the gala is utterly believable, which makes this episode almost funny. The image is well done, as usual, with excellent framing, posing, expresssons, and lighting. That bit about LL is interesting - I must look into that. It is most impressive how you used the one model for all three background characters. I hope it helped keep your DS3 from crashing this time.
