Description

I gave Ryan Archer’s ‘Golden Forest’ tutorial a try; and, must say that it was a very informative lesson. I learned a number of techniques I wasn’t aware of. I also included his ‘Dirt and Soil Pack’ in this scene available at the NWDA site: ( http://www.nwdanet.com/home ) where his Golden Forest tutorial is also available. You can also get the tutorial at Ryan’s site: http://www.archer-designs.com/ . Some of the things I had to do differently were to eliminate the four populations of grasses suggested in the tutorial. Reason: several trace ray and populator errors. Additionally, I had to reduce the suggested rendered image size from 1600 x 1000 to 1280 x 800 in order to get a successful render. The prime reason for these issues is probably because I’m running a 32 bit OS with 4 GB of RAM and a quad-core processor. It was suggested that a 64 bit OS might eliminate the problem issues. I had also been informed that a 32 bit OS can handle up to 4GB of ram (usually 256-512MB are used by video which gives you 3.5-3.7GB) while a 64bit OS can go up to 8GB. Perhaps these are specific limitations of Terragen 2 – not sure. The trees include three different populations of Walli’s pines. The fourth tree/bush includes the ‘Pinus Negra’ which is the lighter colored plant in the scene. Bob PS - There is a forest preserve south of Chicago called 'Dan Ryan's Woods' ...FYI.

Sounds like a very worthwhile tutorial - as near as you can get to the real thing. Haven't used Terragen except to make some terrains and some skies - this is a real eye-popper. On your comment on 32 bit OS, I seem to remember that 2Mb is the most your 32 bit apps can actually use (but I could be wrong).

Wow Bob, this render turned out excellent. Can't say I've seen better done with Terragen. Have to say this is pretty much photo perfect. Well done!!! As for the computer, just got one with 64-bit OS, quad-core and 6gb RAM and it makes a huge difference in rendering and render time and a lot less errors.

I am very impressed by this work - it stunned me by it's difference. You have really got this nailed, Bob. Try as I might, I can't get TG2 to play fair. And at the end of the day I'd rather be creative than a slave to the learning curve.

Outstanding work, Bob, in all aspects. I love the atmosphere- perfect light-haze mix (lends such great mood), and the tree placement seems impeccable. Realistic and very beautiful.

Well Bob it may not be golden but, it's still excellent...I've not progressed enough to add plants and trees to TG2 though that is my overall goal...to make a jungle planet :) Please help this lost TG2 user and abuser....maybe a teamwork jungle planet....low level....water....too many plants....lighting....trees....ferns....shadows....rope vines...you know.....lost Maya city....well, maybe not, you being from the desert :)...anyway....want to streach TG2 with me...yeah....how about it Hoover man???

@ Markal: You must think I'm 'Tarzan'. Hey, maybe you can be 'Cheetah'. We'll work on the 'Jane' character. Sounds like a good idea. My last image used a cool way (from Ryan's tutorial) to use a distance shader for getting objects (trees; etc.) away from obstructing the camera view. We can use it in a project. Anyway, let me think on this for awhile; and, I'll get back to you. E-mail me with any other ideas you might have.
