Description

Do you see the pineapple above the door? The pineapple is a traditional symbol of hospitality and welcome, and was widely used in the 1700 and 1800s. The open door in this image reinforces the message. There are several quilt patterns that use the pineapple motif, and it was common to put a quilt with that pattern on a guest's bed as a welcoming gesture. Four poster beds often have pineapples carved into the bedposts for the same reason. Gateposts, door lintels (as in this photograph), weathervanes, wall stencils, placemat decorations, doormats ... you can find pineapples everywhere, and they all say the same thing ... WELCOME!

I never knew that about pineapples--and yet I've seen them in the very places you mention. More of that trip thru different eyes!!

Chicago is full of those pineapples...there are even some REALLY OLD places far to the south of the city, where the small floor tiles form a rather disturbing swastika motif...more from geometrical cheapness than any Nazi inclinations, but still...Chicago...whether you love it or not, it's not going anywhere. But enough of that. I love this shot, mostly because of the day on which it was taken. It is superbly detailed and makes me think that doors can be interesting outside of Prague as well as in that weird, wild, hallucinogenic city full of guys like Pavl and Stepan, Honza and Jarda. Anyway, I'm rambling on and locked in a strange memory of Prague...as often happens. What I really like about this is the reflections and the color. The whole thing shimmers. I love the details. Chicago doesn't have as many details as its pretty sections imply, but wow...when you see the few we have here, they're astounding! This is great work!

This is a great pic. I love all the reflections. (And you were able to stay out of them!) I have a similar ones I took of the Brill Building in NYC but I can't seem to get one to the point where I am happy with it. Maybe I'll go back to it because of your inspiration. Thanks
