Description

Well, OK, it is a hangar but particularly for those of us who like to turn a wrench and fiddle in the garage, this image is an eye catcher. If you count the number of drip pans under this long retired Grumman F-14 Tomcat, you'll find at least ten and there is still a big puddle of oil/hydralic fluid on the floor. Highly complex machines need daily care or seals dry out, oil leaks in every direction and decay quickly sets in. Bottom line, don't stick a jet fighter in your garage unless you plan to take care of it:-) Bill:) Combat Air Museum storage area, Topeka, Kansas, June 2009. This plane was flown into Topeka in 2003 and has been parked here ever since. For auntietk, there's your pitot tube with the little red flag on it:)

What a great hanger view Bill! I attended aviation school when I was in High School and this brings back old memories. We had a few retired aircraft that were fun to work on..... Ray

Ok, I promise I won't park any planes in my garage--and that's easy, since I don't HAVE a garage!! I also promise I won't have any yard planes sitting around to go with all the yard cars in my neighborhood. Besides all that, this is a great shot of a not so perfect plane!!

LOL. Funny and a shame at the same time. Either way, we bought it. The pitot looks to be nice and shiny at least.

Wowee indeed Bill! This is most definitely an eye catcher, though not particularly fond of turning wrenches, etc :) A stellar and admirable photograph, of a most unique subject and setting! Excellent clarity and detail!

Always room for additional 'drip pans'. I've never owned a garage that was this neat and organized. Cool capture. Dana

Stellar clarity and DOF in this one, Bill! Lots of angular crossbeam activity going on in that garage. The worst boneyard of old aircraft I've ever walked through is the one at the Chino Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California. And, I didn't know auntietk had a thing about pitot tubes.

Oh boy, would i love to have one of those in the garage! And I'd find some means of making sure it wasn't leaking. Those things are like thoroughbred horses - no point in having one if you don't plan on letting it out to run :) @ MagickUnicorn: sorry, no F14's in Canada (wish we had 'em though!). The only country where they are still in service is Iran...

I've owned 4 garages since 1962 (sequentially and haven't had a car in one since 1965. Present day carport won't brook clutter (community rules). Boats and projects always hogged the space.

No garage ... a two-car carport, which I share with Lance. Right now it contains our cars, recycle bins, and a few odds and ends while Lance gets ready for Halloween. (Don't ask about the lawn. Last I saw, it was halfway to being a graveyard.) I believe under Lance's car there is a pile of kitty litter that performs a similar task to that of the drip pans. Ummm ... okay ... what's the red flag for on the Pitot tube?? Wouldn't it get shredded after about five minutes of flight? Or were they transporting it on the back of a pickup truck, nose to the back? Maybe that's the red flag that shows you where the end of the long load is. Or maybe they stuffed it in there so no air would get in. !!! Or maybe it's just a handy place to hang a rag. It's a very fancy model, isn't it? I like the swoopy lines. (The Pitot tube, not the rag.) :D
