Description

These homeless migrants are behind the monument to Emanuele Filiberto Duke of Aosta, chief commander of the III Army (1869/1931). It is at Piazza Castello, behind Palazzo Madama, facing Via Po in Turin, Italy. The idea of promoting the erection of a monument to the Duke of Aosta at Turin during the early Thirties did not come from the House of Savoy as may be expected but from the Italian Army. The venture was alternately praised and criticised for its strong political connotation to the point of turning the idea of dedicating a monument to fallen heroes into glory for a leader and his combatants. The idea of representing the sacrifice of lives during a war to make remembrance eternal was replaced by the image of a hierarchy and general call-up in view of a possible armed conflict. Thank you for your kind comments.

Here we are getting three for the price of one...very imaginative, the way you blended them... It's always sad to see the homeless...most drink a lot, to forget, you'll find them even in the richest country's, so what does that tell you ? BB

This is a very pertinent image showing the celebration of the grandiose ideas of past wars and the forgetting of the broken lives of the present. In San Antonio there has recently opened a campus called "Haven for Hope" which is dedicated to the cause of helping the homeless to transform their lives. It includes medical and health services, food and shelter, and legal services. I don't think everything is open yet, but it is getting close. Your great image reminded me of the song "Remember My Forgotten Man" from the movie “Gold Diggers of 1933" I don't know how to add a link but the address on youtube is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jIofWwupLA Excellent image!

A very good juxtaposition of the uses of a monument.

Moving and maddening also saddened by the way society uses and then casts away those that have made such sacrifices. For many that return life will never be the same. For some…they never really came home. Powerful image 9+

Interesting about the monument. Well, many plans are changed or usurped into something else.
