Description

It is a hot day. There is humidity in the air. Wind topples through leaves in the species of oak and maple, maple and cottonwood. The sun’s warmth rides on this wind, and so it stifles and clings like labor-born sweat. Low to the ground, however, there is comfort. There is shade. Temperatures are cooler, and so, there is little need for the small things in leaf-litter to regulate their temperatures by burrowing underground. They do not cling to the moss-encrusted bottoms of rock, cooling their bellies and bleeding excess heat into moist and lifeless stone. There is time to forage, and so the things that live in leaf-litter do so. There are no hedgehogs here, but there are birds, and so there is some need for caution; the things that dwell in leaf-litter are aware of this, wordlessly so. Where there is the shelter of overhanging foliage, they amble; in the open, they scurry. One of them, just one (a healthy bull of the species) provides opportunity for a good capture, and so he is immortal in the way of any digital image. As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting. Hopefully the week ahead is a good one.

I like your digital image of this little guy. His articulated shell has almost a mother-of-pearl like quality. And the leaf stem when first viewed reminded me of a nicely finished ax handle. Imagination is a wonderful thing and you've demonstrated yours here Chip:) Nice work.

What a gorgeous specimen! I wonder if those lovely gold panels serve any purpose. Maybe they make the creature attractive to others of the same species.

Sexual dimorphism in woodlice? Who knew? The markings on this one are quite stunning. He looks like he polished himself up for the photoshoot. What Bill does for planes, you do for bugs, and it never ceases to amaze me! Excellent image.

Looking at this little fellow a piece of old polished amber comes to mind. Which is ironic because such substances are the death of little creatures such as this.

Immortalized for sure, as long as... You know, it almost seems to me, with a mirror-like reflections on his armour, as if he just stepped out, from underneath some of our rainforest fern's...I must admit, living in the sub-tropic region, that this was my first impression. Thank you for the special info, of which I had little idea... p.s. I promise, I will read some of your 'Erzaehlungen', I also adore Kafka, thank heavens for Max Brod's intuition to save some of his works. BB
