Description

This little gecko regularly visits the bathroom at night. Keeps the mozzies and miggies under control, so I do not mind at all. As for my daughter... well... she has come to respect his value! This shot does give any idea of his size or where he was. He/she is about 100mm (4in) long and was right up the wall close to the ceiling. I was confused because it looks like I have cut it out. Looking at the EXIF data I see that I did something that I very seldom do - used the on camera flash! The fact that he was on a light blue wall in the corner near the white ceiling meant that there was a lot of bounce, hence very reduced shadows. By the way, those are not suckers on his finger tips. Recent studies of the spatula tipped setae on gecko footpads demonstrate that the attractive forces that hold geckos to surfaces are van der Waals interactions between the finely divided setae and the surfaces themselves. Every square millimeter of a gecko's footpad contains about 14,000 hair-like setae. (Wikipedea) Oh, this is a local gecko in Cape Town, South Africa. Here endeth the lesson! Clive

How fascinating, Clive! I love to know things like that, and how I wish we had these here in England. Mind you, my lodgers might be less keen, they don't even really like my spiders.

These things freak me out Clive. They are also very prominent in Durban! I was visiting my friend once and while showering, one of these critters fell from the ceiling onto me... Needless to say - chaos erupted. He didn't get injured but I almost broke some bones in my attempt to get away - with the necessary noices of course!!! Very good capture under the circumstances!!! :)

Good pic...the flash worked to your distinct advantage. Had these little guys in Vietnam...since they liked to snack on mosquitoes and other pesky insects, I like geckos a lot!!!

Mind-boggling info and the photo is excellent. The use of the flash seems to have turned in your favor here. I think a blue background would have not been as attractive and I also like how the background doesn't compete in any way for attention in this.
