Description

#13: 13 Ghouls a' Gazing From, “The Devil and Daniel Webster” – Stephen Vincent Benet I hope you’ll enjoy the 2009 edition of my cartoon illustration series, inspired by “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” This year, each image is based on a scene from a classic story of horror or science fiction in Western literature. The image captures the moment when Daniel Webster realizes that his opposing lawyer, the judge, and the jury are all interested in more than just the soul of his client, Neighbor Jabez Stone. Mr. Webster is not portrayed in the attire of his antebellum era, but rather in the kind of outfit one might expect a 20th Century professor to wear at a college like his alma mater, Dartmouth. Webster won his case against formidable odds. But this genre contains many stories about people whose deals with supernatural beings don’t turn out as well. “Props” to 3D Café (sconce), Music2u4u (gavel), PhilC (cape, hood), RobinWood (pentagram), and anyone I may have missed. Selections from the same shelf: “Faust,” Johanne Wolfgang von Goethe “The Devil and Tom Walker,” Washington Irving “The Monkey’s Paw,” William Wymark Jacobs
