Description

Robert Shields was born in Los Angeles (of course) and studied under the legendary Marcel Marceau. Upon returning to the United States he began working in Union Square, San Francisco. By the time he met and formed a partnership with Lorene Yarnell, who would become his wife, the ‘art’ of mime had become very popular. Soon it became impossible to take a walk without seeing black clad, white faced clowns trapped in invisible boxes or leaning against non-existent walls or walking against wind that wasn’t there. Seeking to escape the plague of ‘street artists’ I fled one day to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Novato, California. After Good Queen Bess officially opened the Faire, I began wandering through the village. Ahh, the Elizabethan Age! No traffic, no telephones and, best of all, no mimes! And then, suddenly, they were all around, everywhere! There were mimes with puppets, mimes standing still like statues, even feral mimes in trees, waiting to pounce.

Scarey! Four mimes! Is this your halloween picture? I saw a Marcel Marceau show in New York once. The part I remember the most was the bit about Cain and Abel. This is really nice! I'm going to fav a picture of mimes. The land of Hades must be having a cold front moving through. Each individual picture is very good, with great composition, lighting and cropping! Love the way you've put them together! The total effect is wonderful! Very funny narrative!

Love your words! I'm ambivalent about mimes, especially of this sort, although I very much admire the sort that bring to life ordinary everyday things without makeup, costume or props.

Excellent collage that looks great in b/w! Wonderful narative too! I do have a phobia of clowns and that extends somewhat into mimes too so I'm glad that you took the pics as you wouldn't have seen me for dust!

interesting collection of mimes - you'd have a better chance of getting these pictures to talk than a mime!

Mimes do seem to double as stalkers, huh? :-) I've been to Navato's RF as well and Mimes must have played a big part of entertainment in those days portrayed...must be because so many people had their tongues cut out as punishment... LOL

I'm probably a closet mime or something...because they never scare me, never leave me vaguely disturbed...they always remind me of androids in need of programming upgrades or something. At any rate, I like them, and your collage of shots does great justice to the art. I saw quite a few mimes in Prague and never actually got to photograph them. These shots are wonderful, I'm particularly mesmerized by the bottom center mime...something about his pose and facial expression seems distinctly...non-mime...or at the very least, like an alien who is finally starting to get good at imitating humans. Great work here. And I can see that I have a lot of exploring to do in your gallery! I look forward to that!

yes I can understand you wanting to escape them, it's not the mime that worries me it's the fact they are made up like clowns - enough to curdle my blood and prompt a cold sweat!

It seems you've stirred up a hornets nest with your mime montage. I am ambivalent to mimes not having been overly exposed to them. Still you must admit it is a talent to pretend you're in a box. Your photos are as always superb and the whole composition is very well balanced. Excellent job.

I have a list of old photos and old writings to do in your gallery, and you might wonder why---if I'm only doing one comment now---why I'd pick this montage. Well because the individual shots here have a light and shadow I love, because they have the cloistered light and shadow that's so much a part of theatrics, because your crops zero us into the real intensity of these performers, and your stark blacks and whites make them the more intense---the woman on the left is an example, or the deep shadow on the man on the bottom. The light on the top woman leaves the center of her face in shadow, an 'inversion' which is so theater-like. The guy on the right---draped over a trunk---is something out of a Shakespearean comedy, with spirits and donkeys and god-knows-what. And your organization of them in a kind-of bent cross makes a real theater-presentation, like this were for the cover of the program (as if these were all part of the same performance). I have to get back here and comment on more, but for now I did this. You're a real sneak to go around commenting everywhere but not posting---I was beginning to feel hugely guilty, so I just had to give something back. Thank you for your wishes for my bday, and your wonderful comments (incl the 'sublime' one---I thought, is that comment for me??? thank you, whoosh, thank you so much for what you wrote!) Thank you for your kindness and support over all, Mark, I appreciate it greatly. I hope things are getting better for you, and I wish you a good pesach if you celebrate it, or just some decent matza if you don't. (I don't anymore, though a good serving of jewish drywall with chrane---hard to pass that up, esp if you're looking to empty your sinuses and not take a s__t for 6 weeks...) I'll be back for more next time...these older photos are a real gem.
