Ultrafractal 5.02
Hi y'all! I've been a bit lax in fractalling lately, partially due to exhaustion from creating my last two upped pieces and because I've suddenly become a rabid rock-hound. (pun intended - lol). Thing is, Florida is probably the worst state in the country to look for rocks and crystals - the only "rocks" here are pieces of quahog clam shells - LOL!
So, I've been spending my time scoping out landscapes that have "river rock" in them. Sheesh - I feel like the funny guy (their lead guitarist) on the cover of Foghat's old album, "Fool for the City" who is fishing in a manhole on a street in New York City - LOL! Actually, though, you'd be surprised at some of the stuff you find. A guy here at work actually found 11 amethysts. A bit faded but the real thing. I never found one, myself, in the landscaping here at work - I suspect Jake dun did scarfed them all up. I HAVE found some neat agate-ish stuff, though, and colored quartz. A number of us at work have bought rock tumblers and are busily ticking off our wives with all the noise and mess.
Anyhow, Joie and I have decided to go to Georgia and South Carolina on mining expeditions. Not the hokey "here's a salted bucket of dirt, now go over to the sluice and find the rubies we put in there" type but real live rock pick, pry bar and sledge hammer digging. Panny, if you see this, were headed up your way on the 30th - Tignall, Ga (Jackson Crossroads amethyst mine) - maybe we can meet you and the Skipper? Should be fun, though pretty rugged work.
Oh yeah, the fractal - Just something neat I got sidetracked on while I was exploring Julia/fbm PT's in the course of putting together my "castles". Hope y'all like it!
Thanks for stopping by, don't foget to wipe the silica quartz and hematite granules off your shoes - lol!
Rick

"Just something..." Your work is never "just something". Looks like dangerous creatures. But what magnificent 3D-work. Good luck hunting rocks (now I'm seeing rocks running over all the place while Rykk is in pursuit. Lol).

As a geologist, I can only say "Cheers" on your expedition! Nice image :)

Two word: Strong and Superb!!! :)

I see the remains of a huge crab-like creature - kinda scary! Good luck with the expedition - my father used to tumble stones, which fascinated my kids - and it certainly became an 'addiction' but quite a nice one to have.

Superb. Of course I like it!

Well, I can't think of anything much more exciting to do. I love rocks- all the cool formations and finds. Sometimes John and I stop frequently on a trip just to get some good shots. I know you guys will have a blast! Awesome design, colors and texture work, Rick. Beautiful, top-notch work!

This is fantastic. This reminds me of an architectural dig. I love the depth of the forms. It feels like you took a slice of time from the ground.

Just got back from 7 months in the Sierra's of CA. Didn't want to leave! I'm a rock nut myself, and also have been tumbling them. Have a blast Rykk on your expedition...hope you find some awesome gems!! Always love viewing your art, and this piece is just as awesome as the rest of them!!! Interesting ~ the first thing that popped into my mind while viewing this ~ is the Pirates of the Caribbean, (Disneyland Ride in CA). I think it should be up on the wall inside the ride!! =) Take care, and have fun...DJ

Quite an amazing Bronze Age piece under those quarry tiles! Love the metallics :) I love rocks too, or at least the beads and pendants that come with the polishing and shaping. As for the mining part... I prefer cloud-watching :D

Alway a treat to see your Masterful Fractal art!

Wonderful textures and colouring in this beautiful fractal. I hope you enjoy your rock hunting.

Gorgeous! I'm a rockhound too! I have a very extensive mineral collection. My favorite hunting ground is in Colorado.

Ah! A human erosionist! My sole achievement is a lump (small) of lead taken from one of the now disused mines in Swaledale, Yorkshire. I'm still looking for a chunk (bigger) of gold to go with it! Like the picture, have you made it to a 1,000 layers yet? Joie really must like fractals. They keep you quiet; but teaching her to wield a hammer???

Did you find anything? My family would love to do something like that one day. Either the bucket way or the real heavy work way. Hope it was fun and you found some lovely pieces! As for the image, would not want to be around that critter or thing. Real moody/creepy piece of art. Well done!

Sorry to see you've packed in the fractals. You were (are) the best! I've gotten too grumpy to continue rock-hounding but have taken up fossil fish collecting. Neat stuff. You approach the man in the fossil store, open your wallet and hand him some assorted bills. He gives you a nice one or two pounder already filleted. Take care. Brian

Where are you? It's been too long!! Miss your work! (: Had to replace the other comment. lol q-:
