Description

Failte! Today a more "countryside" pic of Scotland. This is the Connel bridge, situated near Connel, a very small village near Oban. More then 100 years ago there existed a booming tourist industry in The Trossachs, heated up by the novels of Sir Walter Scott and others. To get more tourists to the western shore they decided to build a railroad between Callander and Oban, the "Callander & Oban Railroad". The Connel bridge was part of a branch route to Ballachulish at Loch Leven and crosses Loch Etive, a saltwater bay. The pic here shows a strong tidal flood stream. Connel bridge was built by Arrols Bridge & Roof Company, Glasgow. The bridge has a weight of 2600 tons, a span of 500 ft (150 m), an elevation of 50 ft (15 m) and construction costs were 43000 pound. It was finished in May 1903, and the railroad opened its service in August 1903. Since 1909 cars were transported across the bridge by train, and 1914 a street was added. The bridge is only a one-track railroad bridge, so trains and cars had to be divided from each other from the beginning. The street was closed by barriers on both sides, when a train passed. The railroad was closed in 1966 and the bridge became a single street bridge. Because the construction is very narrow, cars cannot pass together till today. The traffic is regulated by traffic lights on both sides. The arrows on both sides were widened up so trucks can pass through. I hope you enjoy this pic. Comments are always welcome. Thanks for those who commented my older pics or took favorites. Goodbye for the moment. billcody

From this vantage point it appears the bridge sits alone in the countryside with no civilization around. The two peaks on the bridge appear to point to the sky which is spectacular. Great shot! Nice history as well.
