Description

Irrigation pipe… that is what I thought it was as I was driving down the farm road. There is a lot of the plastic pipe lying around, trashed by tractors, etc. Thankfully the kinks in this pipe made me think twice. I know there are a lot of people who would not think twice about adding a tyre tread pattern to Eve’s tempter, not me. There are plenty of moles in the area and the Mole Snake (Pseudaspis cana) is a perfect way of nature dealing with them! He is non-venomous and a good burrower and spends much time underground where it finds its rodent prey. This one looked about 1.5m (4.9 feet) in length, thus a well developed adult. I was not about to pick him up to confirm! Given his close call with my car and the fact that I got out of the car to photograph him, I was quite surprised that he did not move at all. It was about mid-morning on a cloudy day, so guess he was just trying to warm up on the sand. It helps to have a camera on hand! Cheers, Clive

PSDuck reminded me of my favorite joke: Q: What's the difference between a dead snake and a dead lawyer in the street? A: Skid marks by the snake. Anyway... ...I love this shot. I'm something of an ophidiophile...which is just a fancy way of saying snake lover. I've always wanted exotic snakes as pets...the non-venomous/non-constrictor sorts, unless of course the constrictor sorts view me as too big to eat. I love his guy's color, and the facial details. Amazing work.

Non-venomous you say! He looks far from harmless to me eh!!!!!!!!! Where I live in Australia we have heaps of snakes, but unfortunately none of them are non-venomous. Yeah I agree I would never run over them. They have their place in the world like everything else.

Glad you spared him. He looks like he could use a meal. I stear clear of snakes...they just creep me out...but age has brought a wee bit of wisdom my way and they do have their function in nature. We have "black snakes" here in Kansas that get rather big but they are not venemous and eat rodents. As long as they stay outside, I am glad to know they are around doing their thing.
