HISTORY: Babenhausen Kaserne was built from 1901 to 1903 and used for several purposes from a morgue and hospital for the German Army. As a camp for displaced Jews after the WW2. It was then occupied by different units of the US Army. It was finally closed in 2007 and given back to the German government and has fallen into a state of disrepair due to local politics. PHENOMENA: This is a short list of the type of things that were happening at the post (if you do a search yourself you will find this is the general Phenomena listed!) The ghosts of German soldiers, some in WWII uniforms, have been reported. Lights are said to turn off and on by themselves and voices are heard in the basement of the headquarters building. Footsteps and commands are allegedly heard at night, supposedly without physical cause. Legend has it that if you pick up a telephone, a woman will at times be heard talking backwards un intelligible, it is neither German nor English. The town was the site of a witch burned at the stake in the 18th century, and her ghost is said to have seduced, and then killed, 5 German soldiers in the early part of the 1900's. (I could find no such proof as to this last one but is listed in several of the listings for this place, so I leave it for you to decide.) THE STORY: NOTE: The following is a supposed eyewitness account that happened to a soldier and his wife while stationed at Babenhasuen. My wife and I were walking our dog late one night by the old barracks building. We felt something very strange and our dog started barking and growling, but we could not see anything so, we just kept going. Every night we did our walks and same thing. Then one night it was about midnight and the weather was eerie my wife looked up at a 3rd floor window and saw 2 shadowy figures. She said, "look see that?" I saw what looked liked two german officers standing there. Well Babenhausen has a history of hauntings so we went out every night and we found old buildings and we would hear noises and see ghost. That's not all, one night I was coming home from work and as I walked back home I heard voices from a building. I thought it was the ponds guards (local national security service for the post) doing their communications check. It got closer and closer, and as I turned around I was face to face with 2 Nazi officers. They pulled out a pistol and I about sh!# my self. I turned and I ran and I did not stop until I got home I told my wife and she thought I was just kidding. But then one night she encountered the same thing and reported it to the military police The mp's said we know and they told us the whole story about the kasern. The barracks was a morgue where dead bodies were stored.Lights turning off and on and shadowy figures walking the grounds. Well we moved to Darmstadt and the hauntings stoped till now....... Kelly barracks is haunted and everyone here is scared to walk in the basement of the arms room were the weapons are stored.
